Most organizations need a printing service on a regular basis, whether it is for marketing purposes or for internal communication. Hence, it is important to have some fundamental knowledge of how printing works, particularly offset printing, which is one of the most widely used printing technologies.
The users and the printers like offset printing due to its cost effectiveness for the production of large number of prints. The customers giving big printing orders are recommended by the printers to choose offset printing due to this reason.
Offset printing uses oil based ink, which does not mix with water. The offset printing gets its name from the fact that the designs are transferred indirectly from the plates to the paper by use of rubber blankets as the agents.
The process begins by preparing the designs. Film negatives were used in the earlier times for making images and then reproducing them to aluminum based printing plates. In the present times, the printers can make use of the image setting system for preparing the plates directly. This plate is then placed on a cylinder in the proper configuration. Then the water and ink are dispersed on the image plates, one after another. While the ink gets stuck to the image, the water gets stuck to that part of the plate which has no image so that the ink does not spill beyond the image.
Next, the image is inverted when it is put on to a rubber blanket which is attached to another cylinder. The image is now printed with its correct side facing up by cutting sheets of papers into appropriate size and putting them on a third cylinder.
Printed sheets are stapled, pasted, or assembled in any other way as required and the printing company sends them after giving some finishing touches.
