A small business is often run on a shoestring. More often than not there is just one person wearing many hats and in charge of many areas ( all of them?).

So a small business website needs to be more than a fancy branding exercise. Leave that to the corporate giants and their endless internet marketing allocations.

So going to a very big web design company might not be such a good idea. Not only will they be expensive, they might not understand the needs of a small business.

A better solution is to go to a web designer who runs their own, small business. They are more likely to understand your needs and limits

1.You need a website that is affordable and preferably without monthly charges and fees. There is nothing worse than getting hit with hidden expenses when you’re already on a strict marketing budget

2. Even though it might be cheap in cost it needs to look professional. It doesn’t need to be an award winning work of art though, so skip the expensive graphic designer stuff for now

3. It should be a complete package and include things such as hosting and domain name. This saves you time and saving time saves you money

4. All costs should be transparent and well documented. It’s amazing how many web design companies don’t even put a price for their services on their own websites.

5. The site should be well optimized to rank well in the search engines. You want it to be found after all and the best way to get traffic is through Google, Bing and Yahoo.

And the last thing…

6. If you don’t understand ask questions. You might feel silly doing so but any web designer worth dealing with will be able to explain it all in lay terms.
