Will unemployment benefits be extended?
Leaders in the US Senate are looking to pass a 15- or 30-day extension of federal unemployment benefits this week.
Unless Congress extends unemployment benefits, the checks of roughly a half-million Americans will run out by the end of month — and more by the end of the year. Cynthia Bowers reports.

The endless unemployment extensions are hard to justify when I am scraping by having to do whatever it takes to pay my bills. As a “self-employed” / “freelancer” / “independent consultant” for the same company for 5 years I lost my income when the company went bankrupt. . I’ve cut down everything to the bone and beyond. Sold off personal property. Taken work way below my level, almost entry level. Moved downward in housing. But the “no-work pay” for others keeps getting extended and extended and extended supported by Federal Tax dollars. It leaves a bad taste. Either widen benefits to include the rest of us who did not work on staff or let us all stew in the same thin soup. Maybe more families hung out over the hairy, ragged edge will develop some political will. There is a difference between state and federal unemployment benefits. Federal unemployment benefits extend state unemployment benefits out to 26 weeks. They must be explicitly passed by Congress, which doesn’t happen unless there’s a particularly bad recession. They’re paid for out of our federal tax dollars.
@zzap999 hang on to what u have and try to survive the next morning. My heart goes to u all without jobs taking care of ur families. Soon it will be over. finger cross. Look at the bright side, u are feeling what American were feeling in the 1920s and after that u bounced right back. but it takes years to recover but be certain thats there is light at the end of the tunnel.
@zzap999 I live in los Angeles and it very hard here because its over populated but I will keep trying I’m glad I save all my money
@orpado1968 We are back to the mid 1990′s. We should of been there all along. All the hype about internet stock prices and daytrading was just that, hype and fluff.
@zzap999
Not necessarily. I might move to a different country.
In addition while my degree is very useful, many degrees are completely worthless yet funded equally.
If financial aid was removed only people getting useful degrees would pay for college, they would work to get through it, and the price of college would drop without the free money students get.
@zzap999
Oh god. So you are really just a welfare queen who hates gay people.
@evan13579b Financial aid is a govt. investment on your future. So you return the favor back later when you enter the workforce.
@fury350z
Plus the funny thing is all these unemployment welfare cases are in fact living so I don’t see what your point is.
@zzap999
Those companies don’t really deserve to pay you to not work for them anymore, and the stuff you paid in isn’t meant to be indefinitely extended like it is and like you want it to be.
@zzap999
Perpetual unemployment benefits are not a republican principle.
I bet you only hate welfare when you the one paying for it.
@fury350z
Did you even read what I said? It doesn’t matter if its not enough to live on if you have extra money saved up or you have a spouse that works. Of course you ignore what I just said. Also there are other programs that allow one to eat for free (food stamps) and other things at the state level which pile on to make one barely have to work.
@TheDonnie2164 Been there. I’ve been working since high school and every job is bull. Now I’m collecting my dues.
@bigfreezeky Exactly, Approx. two years is the most you collect then your on your own.
@MT22202 70 cents to 1.90 is generated economically for every dollar spent in UI benefits. The Republicans are dishonest when it comes to that point.
@jason4275 Go and work.
@evan13579b We paid into it while we were employed. Furthermore, the money comes from the taxes of companies that laid you off.
@milmil0428 The day that happens is the day the dollar collapses. We got China right where we want them.
@Dogfish1960 They are not taking temp jobs because those jobs don’t qualify for UI benefits when they end. When my UI benefits run out completely and I still can’t find a full time job then I’ll take any job status to survive.
@evan13579b I’m republican in principle. I just don’t like what the Republicans are doing with UI benefits. They are doing this because they are not in power and it’s costing me.
@evan13579b I’m anti gay marriage and against teaching children that homosexuality is normal. However, when it comes to money and the economy, I’m open to any policy that benefit me. In these times, that’s all I’m concerned about.
@evan13579b It’s very relevant. The very people bitching about how the unemployed are too “lazy” to find a job because they’re getting handouts don’t understand that it is not enough to live on. As far as a spouse ….n/a! And to your comment on “preparing for times without a job,” never assume to know someone.
The money that the govt controls and “handout” to us is ours. We should not be subjected to some bureaucratic jack off telling us how much we should receive.
I was “offered” a early retirement in July. However, I’m too young to get a pension check. Therefore, I get nothing! People that took the same deal in September got help with COBRA and unemployment benefits, that keeps getting extended. I feel that I got used! I have had to used my savings to live ….. It was either take the package or get lost …. I guess I got lost anyway ! People taking extended benefits are not even looking for jobs; screw you ! Enjoy your fishing trips !
@fury350z
It is irrelevant whether or not unemployment insurance is enough to live off of.
If you have a spouse who works or some money left over you very well could choose to go without a job intentionally.
It should always have been YOUR responsibility to prepare for times without a job.
However, I don’t diss you or anyone for taking the insurance because that would mean that only the people politicians were bribing would benefit.
I oppose the law but not you taking it when its legal.
The shit has finally hit the fan folks. Your years of living in paradise are gone and now its time to wake up and smell the coffee. While the rests of the world have been living in austerity you spend and spend. Now it your turn to feel how we felt……
@evan13579b I don’t mind working, as a matter of fact, I just recently got a job. I have never and will never approve the govt handouts, especially when it invovles healthcare. As far as the “financial aid” is concerned, that’s my tax dollars! But that is not enough to live off of.
@zzap999
Explain ONE thing you are republican about? Social issues?
So you are a socialist in general but on social issues you support republicans or what?
Republicans would rather extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and add 3.5 TRILLION to the deficit than help people who have been laid off. Selfish pieces of sh*t!
So sad that we act with lightning speed to bail out big corporations, but when it comes to the people that suffer from the corporate greed, we yet again have to bite the bullet. Take from the poor and give to the rich!!! Where is our Robin Hood?!
I was Laid off in 1981. Some say I got cancer as a result of the stress and depression. Some say I was lucky to get cancer and become disabled, without dying. Not my recommendation.
What I do not understand is how we have money to give to other countries, but when it comes to Americans, suddenly we have no money?
I wonder how many Americans being laid off are Republican voters, ie they voted for the very system that isnow making them lose their jobs.
IE, The republican free market
10 out of 10 to Obama for increasing their time on welfare.
Let me tell you the length they say you can collect unemployment is BS. I just opened a new claim and can only get 17.5 weeks of regular unemployment instead of the full 26 weeks. This is based on wages earned and I qualified for 80% of the 26 weeks. I worked a full time seasonal job this summer, that ended on 10-02-09. Goes by earnings in 4 different quarters. I am very thankful for what i got , but 26 weeks is a more secure feeling up north here in a snow bank.
search for “the Obama deception” and many of your questions will be answered.
Yeah i know it,why does it happen
this is part of the NWO plan
bankrupt this country and make this a poor place like the rest of the world.
Second!
